How to build a UTM tracking link
- Paste the page URL you want people to visit.
- Enter a source, medium and campaign name. Add content or term only when useful.
- Copy the generated URL into your email, social post or ad. For a printed placement, generate and download its QR code.
- Open the link to check the destination, then check campaign traffic in your website analytics after publishing.
UTM parameters label a visit; they do not install analytics or count clicks on their own. The destination website needs an analytics service configured to collect and report campaign data.
UTM examples for email, social media and QR codes
These sample labels describe three placements for the same workshop campaign. Keep the campaign name consistent to compare their results.
| Placement | Source | Medium | Content |
|---|---|---|---|
| Email button | newsletter | email | main_button |
| Organic social post | pinterest | social | workshop_pin |
| Printed flyer | flyer | qr_code | front |
For example, the email button could link to:
https://example.com/workshop?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=october_workshops&utm_content=main_button
The example domain and labels are illustrative. A custom medium such as qr_code may need a custom channel group in your analytics; it is not a built-in GA4 channel.
Keep campaign reports consistent
- Use a shared naming convention. Lowercase labels with underscores are easy to reuse;
Emailandemailare different values. - Tag links you distribute through campaigns. Keep ordinary links between pages on your own website free of campaign labels.
- Do not put names, email addresses or other personal information in UTM values. They are visible in the URL.
- In GA4, look in Traffic acquisition and select session source / medium or session campaign. A completed booking or purchase needs its own measurement setup.
See Google's campaign URL documentation for parameter definitions and reporting details.

Can I use a UTM link in a QR code?
Yes. Fill in the required fields and choose Generate QR. The downloaded image permanently contains that URL. For an editable destination and scan analytics, create a new dynamic QR in your Scanely account. Read how QR scan tracking works.
